10 way-too-early candidates for Mr. Georgia

Mr. Georgia is the award that goes out to the best high school football player in Georgia for that season and last year, Ousmane Kromah took home the inaugural award. The Lee County running back dominated all season to secure the nod. This season, many players hope to take home the award in 2025. Here are 10 way-to-early candidates to win the award (in no particular order). Also note that the award is only eligible to seniors.

Brodie McWhorter (QB) Cass

Brodie McWhorter is a four-star recruit according to Rivals and is one of the top quarterbacks in the state. McWhorter missed most of last season with an injury, but will be fully healthy to go in 2025. Cass will need McWhorter to be back if it wants to take a run at a state championship. The last time McWhorter was fully healthy was when he was a sophomore and Cass went to the quarterfinals.

Travis Burgess (QB) Grayson

Burgess is one of many Grayson stars who will be in the running for this award. The UNC-commit quarterback was an Elite 11 finalist and was recently named a four-star recruit (and number one quarterback in Georgia). The defending state champion will look to dominate the gridiron again in 2025 during his senior season. Burgess threw for 2,255 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior.

Tyriq Green (Athlete) Buford

Tyriq Green transferred to Buford ahead of last season and made an immediate impact. The four-star athlete rushed for 527 yards and eight touchdowns last season. On the defensive side of the ball, Green totaled 28 tackles and grabbed a team-leading five interceptions. Green is one of the top athletes in the country and will look to lead Buford back a top 6A.

Kimauri Farmer (RB) Carrollton

Farmer broke onto the scene as a sophomore at Carrollton following an injury to the starting running back. Since, he has become one of the top running backs in the state. He ran for over 1,300 yards last season and 15 touchdowns. He is only going to get better and with Carrollton likely to be a favorite to win 6A, Farmer will get a ton of touches in the playoffs. Farmer recently committed to Liberty.

Tyler Atkinson (LB) Grayson

Atkinson is the face of Georgia football ever since Julian Lewis graduated in December. Atkinson is  a five-star recruit and is the highest ranked player in all of Georgia according to On3 Sports. Last season, Atkinson was MaxPreps’ Junior of the year in the entire country and helped Grayson to a state championship. If Grayson repeats this year it would almost be certain that Atkinson will be a front-runner for the award.

Kaiden Prothro TE Bowdon

Prothro has the unique opportunity to go for the four-peat with Bowdon this season. This feat is nearly impossible to accomplish and if Bowdon does just that, Prothro will be one of the biggest reasons why. There is no-telling what the five-star TE will do in his senior season. However, Prothro will have to step up with a new quarterback in 2025.

CJ Givers (RB) Fellowship Christian

As a junior, Givers ran for over 1,400 yards and 21 touchdowns as he helped Fellowship Christian to a semi finals appearance in the private classification. This season, Fellowship returns a lot of star talent and will be a favorite to win the private classification. Givers is committed to Duke.

Jorden Edmonds (DB) Sprayberry

Edmonds is listed as the number one defensive back in the country, the 2026 defensive back’s Sprayberry team went to the 5A quarterfinals last season. Edmonds himself had a great season as a Junior, using his 6-foot-2 frame to help him lock down opposing receivers. He committed to Alabama a few weeks ago.

Jae Lamar (RB) Colquitt County

Last season’s winner was a south Georgia running back so why not another this season. Lamar only recently started playing varsity football, but has blossomed into one of the best players in the state. Lamar had 885 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, but will get a lot more touches in 2025. The 2026 running back is committed to UGA. Colquitt County will have its work cut out for them and Lamar will have to show up big-time if the Packers are to make a run at state.

Xavier Griffin (LB) Gainesville

Griffin is another five-star linebacker in the state of Georgia. The Gainesville star will look to lead the Red Elephants to a 5A title in his senior season. He has been one of the best players in Georgia ever since he stepped on a high school football field. He has a massive 6-foot-3 frame and is a nightmare matchup for opposing offenses. He can both drop back in coverage or blitz the quarterback if he wants.
