The 2025 high school baseball season is one month old and teams all around the state have been getting back into the swing of things. MaxPreps.com has released their initial top-25 rankings and two teams from Georgia are making their mark on the national stage.
Etowah and Houston County come in as the lone teams from Georgia to be included in the opening rankings, with the Eagles sitting in the top-five at No. 5 and the Bears at No. 16. Etowah is ranked as the top team in the state and have accumulated a 9-1 record in their first 10 games, with the only blemish at the hands of North Paulding.
In our Score Atlanta baseball rankings from Craig Sager, Etowah is ranked atop Class 6A while Houston County tops Class 5A’s rankings
The Eagles are led by head coach Greg Robinson who helped lead the program to a 35-4 record a season ago, along with a state championship in Class 6A. The state championship was the second in program history and they will try to be the first school in the classification to repeat as champions since Pope in 2017-18.
Etowah is led by a quartet of SEC and ACC baseball commits including 2025 LHP Jackson Rose (UNC-commit), 2026 RHP/1B Matthew Sharman (UGA-commit), 2026 OF Deion Cole (Georgia Tech-commit) and 2026 OF Trevor Condon (Tennessee-commit). The combination of Rose and Sharman on the mound will make things tough for opposing batters at the plate as the pair of 2024 Prep Baseball All-Americans lead the Eagles rotation. Cole and Condon are listed as two of the top juniors in the country, with only more room to grow in the 2025 season.
For Houston County, the Bears are looking to take things one-step further than a season ago when they were eliminated in the semifinals in Class 5A. But the talented group that Houston County has still holds a lot of big game experience as well as a handful of seniors committed to play baseball at the next level. Senior outfielder Vick Gann (Georgia Gwinnett-commit), RHP Will Allen (South Florida-commit), SS Ethan Buffone (Mercer-commit), RHP Tucker Hale (Gordon State-commit), and RHP Max Willhide (Chattahoochee Valley-commit) are some of their best players. The Bears are led by head coach Matt Hopkins as he and his team look to win the programs third championship of the decade as well as their fifth overall. The Bears most recently won in 2023, and are now going for five state championship victories in the last 11 years if they succeed this season.
