Class 4A Blog: Southeast Whitfield finds new head football coach in former Chattooga OC Jesse Peppers

The Southeast Whitfield Raiders have found the school’s next head football coach as Jesse Peppers has been appointed to the position, the school announced this week.

Peppers spent last season serving as Chattooga High School’s offensive coordinator, and now gets his first head coaching opportunity with Southeast Whitfield. Peppers was hired in June before the start of the season and left the school after a season for a fresh start in a brand new role.

At Chattooga last season, Peppers had the offense firing on all cylinders as the play caller for the Indians a season ago.

In last year’s high-powered Chattooga offense, Peppers had one of the best running backs the state has ever seen in Zayden Cook. Cook finished with the most rushing yards in the entire GHSA a season ago, totaling 2,939 yards on his way to posting the fifth-most rushing yards in a single season in GHSA history.

Along with his nearly-3,000 yard season, the standout running back scored 33 touchdowns with a longest-rush of 99 yards on the season, averaging around 267 yards per game.

Chattooga’s offense under Peppers’ play-calling totaled a staggering 3,338 rushing yards, led by Cook who accounted for around 88% of the teams rushing yards from a season ago.

Peppers will be looking to ignite a spark in the Southwest Whitfield football program as the school will be looking for its first winning season since 2017.

Since their last winning season, the Raiders have totaled a 12-56 record and are seeking their first playoff appearance since the 2014 season under former head coach Sean Gray.

Peppers’ hiring was approved by the Whitfield County Board of Education on Monday during their monthly board meeting that resulted in the start of a new era of football for the Southeast Whitfield Raiders football program.
