The Class A Div. II playoffs are in full swing and next week will set the semifinalists for baseball, soccer and tennis. On the diamond, Baconton Charter has continued the dominance experienced all season through the first two rounds of the playoffs and is now 31-1 this year with a 22-game win-streak heading into the quarterfinals. The Blazers are perfect against GHSA competition this season with its only loss coming to Valwood in a 5-3 contest back on March 6. Since then, Baconton Charter has won 22-straight and also avenged that loss by defeating Valdwood 5-4 later in March. After sweeping Glascock County 12-0 and 12-0 in the first round of the playoffs, Baconton Charter dispatched Irwin County 7-3 and 9-2 in the quarterfinals. Irwin County was the No. 3 seed out of Region 2—which still has top seed Lanier County and No. 2 seed Charlton County in the playoffs. Lanier County will host Metter next round after the Tigers scored a dramatic 8-5 Game 3 victory over Region 6 champion Crawford County. As for Charlton County, it will visit Region 3 No. 1 ECI. On the bottom right of the bracket, Region 7 champion Bowdon and Region 8 champion Lake Oconee Academy will clash for another top 10 matchup. The Elite Eight has six No. 1 seeds, the No. 2 seeded Charlton County Indians and No. 3 seed Metter left.
On the pitch, the girls will return to action on Monday for the quarterfinals and the boys will play on Tuesday. Atlanta Classical, Lake Oconee Academy and Trion each have the boys and girls still alive in the playoffs.
AROUND THE CLASS GIRLS: Telfair County and Lake Oconee Academy were the first girls teams to advance to the tennis state semifinals this week. Telfair County defeated Seminole County 3-0 and will await the winner of Johnson County and Screven County. Lake Oconee Academy survived a 3-2 quarterfinal bout with Elite Scholars Academy and will take on the winner of Irwin County and Taylor County.
AROUND THE CLASS BOYS: Early County and Taylor County were the first boys tennis teams to advance to the state semifinals—Early County swept Telfair County 3-0 and will await the winner of the Johnson County and Screven County series. On the other side of the bracket, Taylor County defeated Region 1 No. 3 seeded Miller County 3-0 and will face the winner of the Trion and Lake Oconee Academy series.
