Kell 3-star safety Jowell Combay announces top-five schools

Kell’s 3-star defensive back Jowell Combay announced his top-five schools this week as well as a commitment date as his recruiting continues to heat up throughout the summer.

The schools included in the defensive backs top-five includes Missouri, Tennessee, Wisconsin, South Carolina and Georgia as well as a July 9 commitment date as he decides where he will spend his next chapter of his football career.

“Starting with Georgia, I mean I am a hometown kid and I have been watching Georgia play on TV, it’s a blessing to get that offer and for them to actually love me and to have that relationship,” said Combay when asked about what has stood out to him about his top schools. “Wisconsin, Jack Cooper (Wisconsin safeties coach) he’s a great guy who has been very consistent with his recruiting, I like what they have and I am looking forward to going to an OV this week. Tennessee has also been very consistent and that’s been through the entire staff, Banks, Inge, Heupel, Gray, they’ve been very consistent and I appreciate them for that. South Carolina you know Coach ‘T-Gray’ (Torrian Gray, Defensive Passing Game Coordinator/ DBs Coach) is known for developing guys and that’s just what it is and I feel like that has got them to the position that they are in. Missouri, it was great to get down to Missouri, the staff was amazing, they are all great guys and I like their defensive scheme a lot.”

Combay has continued to take visits to these schools he’s interested in, having already visited South Carolina and Missouri last week, as well as Tennessee and Georgia back in May followed by an official visit up to Madison to see Wisconsin this weekend.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensive back will enter his first season with the Kell Longhorns after spending his first three with the Harrison Hoyas.

“I got here in January, so I got here when we were working out and not really playing football yet,” said Combay. “I have been building relationships through that and hanging out with my teammates outside of school. They were very welcoming and I knew only two guys before I got here.”

At Harrison last season during his junior season, Combay led the Hoyas in tackles with 93 total to go along with three tackles for loss, two interceptions and 11 pass deflections as he led the backend of the Hoyas defense.

While Combay showed off his skills on the defensive side of the ball, his versatility was hard to keep off the field on offense as well accounting for 371 receiving yards on 26 receptions, catching two touchdowns on the season a year ago.

Combay is rated as a 3-star recruit on 247Sports.com and a top-50 safety in the country.

The Kell Longhorns and Combay will play the first high school football game in the state of Georgia in 2025 as they will host the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic against South Paulding on August 13 at 8 p.m.
