Lovett baseball looking to end seven-year championship drought

The Lovett Lions clinched their third-straight region title with a pair of dominant wins over Therrell. The team is viewed as one of the few legitimate challengers capable of rivaling two-time defending champion Prince Avenue Christian.

The Lions have dominated their schedule. While they started the season slowly, losing three-straight games, they finished strong, winning 24 of their final 26 games. In region play, Lovett went a perfect 12-0, outscoring Region 5-AA opponents 152-5. Impressively, they shut out their opponents in 11 of those 12 games.

With one regular season game remaining, the Lions have firmly placed themselves in the conversation as one of the top teams in the new Class A-3A Private classification. Lovett is one of the most storied programs in the state. Since the 1990 season, the Lions have won nine state championships, including a dominant stretch from 1990 to 1994 when they captured three titles. However, they are currently tied for the longest championship drought since winning their first in 1990. Their last state title came in 2018, though they have remained competitive, making one finals appearance and two semifinal runs since then.

The team is led by its standout senior duo of James Lester and Joe Crenshaw. Lester is a versatile, do-it-all player who has contributed across nearly every position on the field. He is committed to play at Emory University. The team’s biggest senior star, however, is Crenshaw, a powerful hitter that is also great behind the plate and in the outfield. Crenshaw is committed to play college ball at Richmond.

Lovett will enter the postseason as one of the top contenders in the private classification, but the road to a championship will not be easy. In addition to Prince Avenue Christian, the Lions may have to get through North Cobb Christian, another two-time defending champion. A potential rematch with Holy Innocents’, the only region opponent to score on Lovett this season, could also await along with many other high-end teams that will give any team challenges.

Around the class boys: Prince Avenue won the first game of its final series against Stephens County… Holy Innocents’ dominated its final region series with Carver, winning 31-0 across two games… Greater Atlanta Christian boys’ soccer won its 11th-straight game with a 5-2 victory over Blessed Trinity… Providence Christian soccer defeated Landmark Christian 3-2 in the teams’ penultimate game.

Around the class girls: Hebron Christian girls’ soccer moved one game away from an undefeated regular season with a 2-0 win over Dacula… Savannah Arts suffered its second loss of the season, falling 3-1 to Richmond Hill… Holy Innocents’ girls’ soccer closed the regular season with a dominant 10-0 win over Cass.
