Marist is one of the most consistent programs in the state, and this coming season looks like it could be one of, if not the, most talented teams the program has seen in some time.
The War Eagles have been the model of consistency for 40 seasons under legendary coach Alan Chadwick. Recent years have been no different, with the team making the quarterfinals for the eighth straight year, the longest active streak of its kind in Class 4A. In addition to that, they are coming off a finals appearance where they took North Oconee to the wire.
This Marist team is the most senior-laden and talented group the War Eagles have had in years. Leading the way are Jackson Cox and Jack Richerson. The pair form a dynamic duo playing both ways, serving as edge rushers and tight ends. Richerson projects more as a tight end at the next level and continues a long tradition of high-end Marist tight ends. At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, he is a 3-star recruit committed to play for Georgia Tech. Cox, on the other hand, projects more as an edge rusher. The 3-star recruit turned down offers from schools like Ole Miss, Maryland, and Wisconsin to attend Cornell. Together, they provide a two-way duo that Marist has not had in many years.
In addition to them, the War Eagles have other high-impact players, such as Columbia safety commit Owen Rice and a group of offensive linemen who are consistently among the best in the state.
Marist’s region this coming season will be as strong as it has been in years. Rival St. Pius, along with Tucker and Southwest DeKalb, are all improving year over year after some tough seasons. Marist should be the heavy favorite to win the region, but it won’t be as easy as it has been in some past years.
