Roswell QB Trey Smith is officially off the board after announcing his commitment to Furman University. He details why he made his pledge and became a Paladin.
“What really made it home was the culture. They do all the little things, whether it is the weight room or the classroom. They do everything the right way and play and work hard for each other. My favorite thing about the program is how hard they work in the weight room. It’s a very fast tempo, and everyone is grinding with high energy,” said Smith.
His relationship with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Justin Roper was also fundamental in his decision, and how they treated his family when they went on a visit was something that was vital to his choice.
“My relationship with Coach Roper is very good. He was very cool from the start when I first met him. He’s also the kind of guy that I can talk ball with for hours. It was very good. The coaches were very welcoming to me and my family. They showed us how beautiful the campus was and how peaceful it can be,” said Smith.
“What caught my eye the most was the stadium and the campus. The stadium had a beautiful background, and it was big. The campus was amazing. There were lakes and a waterfall that looked unreal.”
Smith has had a productive summer and continues to showcase his talent, including winning 7 on 7 at Georgia Tech. He was decisive, accurate, and went through his progression in a short span of time, showing what he can do in different high-pressure situations. His elite play was pivotal to Roswell winning the tournament at Georgia Tech. He is the unquestioned leader of the Roswell Hornets and talked about what the program meant to him.
“It means everything to be a Hornet. I’ve been here since 1st grade, so I bleed green. I played with most of my senior teammates since 3rd grade, so it means a little bit more when I’m playing for guys I’ve known my whole life. Being a Hornet means you work hard, never give up, and play for your teammates,” said Smith.
With his senior season coming up, Smith is looking to make some noise and to continue to display his talent and rocket arm. His junior season in 2024 was impressive as he threw for 2,493 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air. On the ground, he was also effective, rushing for 875 yards and 18 touchdowns. If the summer tells us anything, Smith is ready to dominate and finish his final high school season strong.
“I’m very excited for my senior season. It’s my last year as a Hornet, so I want to go out with a bang. I can’t wait to play my heart out with the boys I grew up with for one last time. I hope to accomplish a bunch of things, but my main goals for the team are to win the region, win a state championship, and prove to everyone that doubts us wrong,” said Smith.
With his college decision wrapped up, he can focus on the season and getting the Hornets back to the postseason and ready to make a run in 5A.
