Savannah Country Day girls’ soccer dominated its first-round matchup against Christian Heritage to kick off its quest for a state title. The Hornets overwhelmed the Lions 10-0 in a game they controlled from start to finish.
Six different players scored for the Hornets, most notably senior Harris Stone, who recorded three goals. Stone saved one of the best performances of her career for the big stage. She has only scored three goals in a game twice before in her high school career and hadn’t done so since February of last year, when she netted three against New Hampstead. Her three goals in this match account for a quarter of her season total, bringing her to 12 goals. Interestingly, the team’s leading scorer, sophomore Kate Hunter, did not score in the game. Hunter has 21 goals on the season and has scored in 12 of the team’s 18 games. Her 21 goals are four more than the second-highest scorer and has been a consistent scorer for the team.
The team will face Walker in the second round. Walker is the 15 seed but has hovered near the top 10 all season. The Wolverines are coming off a 2-1 first-round win over Mt. Paran however they are the only team in Class A-3A Private that did not shut out its opponent in the first round. Walker holds an 11-4 record this season; all four of the teams losses were to teams that advanced to at least the second round, three of which are ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications. Walker is a dangerous opponent, having avoided any loss by more than four goals and holding Class A-Division I No. 1 Bremen to just two goals in their matchup. To win, Savannah Country Day will need a strong defensive effort and a standout performance from the team’s scorers like Kate Hunter.
