The 2025 girls soccer playoffs have gotten off to a fast start with some big results. The first year of the GHSA postseason rankings has proven to be mostly correct, with only three lower-seeded teams upsetting higher-seeded teams. Most notably, 23-seed Murray County defeated 10-seed Johnson-Augusta 10-0.
When you look at the top 10 teams in the state, they dominated the first round of the playoffs. The ranked teams went 9-1 in the first round, outscoring their opponents 71-4. The only team to lose was KIPP Atlanta, who lost a close 3-1 match against Therrell. Outside of that one loss, the ranked teams only gave up one goal combined.
The second round is going to see a lot of major games, including three ranked matchups, one of which features two top-five teams facing off. The first ranked matchup will see 1-seed and No. 2-ranked Pike County facing off with No. 10 Stephens County. Both teams dominated their first-round matchups 10-0 and head into the second round carrying momentum that should have them playing well.
The second ranked playoff matchup will feature No. 3 Sonoraville and No. 7 East Jackson battling for a spot in the quarterfinals. The two teams both shut out their opponents, Sonoraville 5-0 and East Jackson 4-0, in the first round. For both teams, this is uncharted territory, with the programs combining for just one playoff win in the past five seasons and neither making it past the second round in that span.
Probably the biggest matchup of the second round will be the battle between No. 1 Columbus and No. 5 Callaway. Callaway had a tough first-round matchup with Union County; the match was a close battle that Callaway was able to pull out 2-1. Columbus, on the other hand, did what they have done all year, dominating South Atlanta 11-0 to extend the team’s second-round playoff streak, which now spans well over a decade.
