Chastain, Alligood resign from their positions with Jones County following 10-2 season with Greyhounds

After putting together Jones County football’s first 10-win season since 2021, head coach Mike Chastain and athletic director Chad Alligood have confirmed that they have resigned from the school.

Chastain and the Greyhounds are coming off of a 10-2 season where they made it to the second round for the second-consecutive season.

This season, Chastain became the winningest coach in the football program’s long history, dating back to its first season in 1929.

In a board meeting that occurred on Jan. 23, disgruntled Greyhounds supporters discussed the former head coach’s move to fire a longtime assistant coach with the school. Along with discussing the firing of an assistant, they also talked about Chastain’s decision to want to use an out-of-state vendor to supply the program with uniforms and equipment, according to The Jones County News.

In his seven seasons leading the Jones County football program, Chastain compiled a 56-20 record taking over for former head coach and current Thomas County Central head coach, Justin Rogers in 2019 after Rogers departed for the Colquitt County head coaching position.

With Chastain at the helm, the Greyhounds won three-consecutive Region 4-5A region championships from 2019-2021, compiling a 20-1 record against regional opponents.

In those three seasons, Chastain and the Greyhounds saw two semi-finals appearances in his 2019 and 2020 as well as a quarterfinals appearance in the following season.

Chastain’s Greyhounds saw postseason appearances in every season he was in charge of the program, bringing them their first region championship since 2001.

Alligood has been the Jones County Athletic Director since December of 2022. The former athletic director served as a high school football coach in the state of Georgia for five seasons, coaching the Washington-Wilkes Tigers for two seasons in 2017-2018 and the Northside-Warner Robins Eagles for three years after before accepting the role as athletic director at Jones County.
