Daily Dive: New head coach Dedrick Mayo brings wealth of experience to Grovetown program

Grovetown will have a new head football coach in 2025 after announcing the hiring of Dedrick Mayo to replace former head coach Cory Evans. Coach Evans was the defensive coordinator for the Warriors prior to taking over for Damien Postell in 2021 and led the program for the past four seasons. Grovetown has competed in Class 6A since the 2016 season, but is now in the largest classification and housed in a stacked Region 4 with teams like defending state champion Grayson, Archer, Rockdale County, Heritage-Conyers, Newton and South Gwinnett. This past season, Grovetown finished 1-9, although the competitiveness of the team was not reflective of the overall record.

Coach Mayo is coming to Grovetown from his most recent position as the head coach of Highlands Community College. While he was at the helm and coaching in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Mayo compiled an 11-11 record.

Before he was at Highlands, coach Mayo spent time as the offensive coordinator for Camden County—giving him experience coaching in Georgia’s highest classification. Additionally, Mayo has proven his ability to turn around a program. While at Atlantic High School in Port Orange, Florida, the Sharks were winless in two of the three seasons prior to his arrival. In his first season, the Sharks finished with a winning record and followed that up in 2019 with the school’s first playoff appearance in seven years. Coach Mayo helped lead the Sharks to their first playoff win in 23 years that same season and tied school record for wins in a season. These achievements earned him Coach Mayo also had stints at Chamberlain High School (Head Coach) and won a district championship as head coach at Warner Christian Academy (2014). He has qualified for the playoffs as an offensive coordinator (Atlantic, Camden County), a defensive coordinator at Spruce Creek and as a head coach both at Warner Christian and Atlantic.

It has been Mayo’s dream over the course of his coaching journey to become a head coach in the state of Georgia and that has now been achieved as he leads Grovetown into the new era. Grovetown has made the playoffs five out of the last 10 seasons, but is looking for its first winning campaign since 2018.
