Daily Dive: South Forsyth hires former Pro Bowl quarterback Kordell Stewart as OC

South Forsyth will have new leadership and added star power on the sideline this season with head coach James Thomson and recently-hired Kordell Stewart—who will serve as the team’s volunteer offensive coordinator. Coach Thomson, a Florida native, was South Florida’s director of internal scouting. He was a Georgia head coach previously at Tucker in 2021 and Northview from 2017 to 2020. Thomson left Tucker to become head coach at Winter Haven in Florida for the 2022 season. He’s also a former head coach in Florida at Gainesville (2011-12) and DeLand (2013-14). Coach Thomson replaces Troy Morris, who went 17-25 in his four seasons at the school and led the War Eagles to a 2-8 finish in 2024.

Thomson was hired in January, but it wasn’t until June that Stewart was hired to serve as the team’s offensive coordinator this fall. It is one of the biggest names that has entered the coaching carousel and Stewart will look to lead the offense after achieving success as a player at every level of the game. Stewart spent 11 seasons as an NFL quarterback—primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nickname “Slash” he played for the Colorado Buffaloes and moments like the hail mary he threw to defeat Michigan that has been deemed the “Miracle at Michigan” represent his incredible and long-spanning career.

After college, Stewart was a second round pick in the 1995 draft and made his first Pro Bowl in 2001, while also receiving AFC Offensive Player of the Year. He was also the cover athlete for the popular and famous NFL Blitz video game. He still ranks sixth in quarterback career rushing touchdowns with 38. Stewart worked as an analyst on ESPN’s College Football Live and officially retired in 2012. Stewart is an avid golfer, but is shifting his focus back to football this fall. When South Forsyth opens up the season against South Cobb on Friday, Aug. 15, it will be the start of a new chapter for the War Eagles and the first game of Stewart’s new coaching career.
